What Is flood Insurance?

Flood insurance comes in two varieties: building coverage and content coverage. These two types of flood insurance work together to insure your home and its contents. Flood building coverage refers to the physical structure and foundation of your home. Most coverage plans include central air and heating systems, plumbing and electrical systems, attached bookcases, cabinets and paneling, and a detached garage. Content coverage protects the contents of your home, and includes furniture, clothes, electronics, curtains, some appliances, art (up to a set limit), and even food in your freezer.

Protect your home

You never think it will happen to you, until it does. Watching as waters rise is an experience no one wants to go through, but it can be made easier with the knowledge that your home is covered by flood insurance. In a matter of hours, a flood can cause you to lose everything. You can have flood insurance to make sure that doesn’t happen.

More About Flood Insurance

Section I - Property dwelling

  • Nationwide, only 20% of American homes at risk for floods are actually covered by flood insurance. Most private insurers do not insure against the peril of flood due to the prevalence of adverse selection, which is the purchase of insurance by persons most affected by the specific peril of flood.
  • Flooding is defined by the National Flood Insurance Program as a general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or two or more properties (at least one of which is your property) from: Overflow of inland waters, unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source, and mudflow.
  • This can be brought on by landslides, a hurricane, earthquakes, or other natural disasters that influence flooding. Many homeowners are not aware that while they may, for example, have earthquake coverage, that coverage may not cover floods that occur as a result of earthquakes.
